This is why I recommend against installing apps that you don’t absolutely need

A question raised on this like: What they’ll do with all these info 🥲, also, how Google play store is allows the app to look for any other apps without user consent?

Re: Why Google does what it does, I’ll say two things.

You have already consented to Google doing whatever they want when you setup your phone the first time. The terms and conditions you hit “Accept” basically gives them free reign over your data on the phone.

It is by design. They stand to gain from allowing apps to look at other apps because it helps them be the go-to app store. It’s capitalism in action.

Re: what they will do with your data - you must understand the functions of privacy technologies. Primarily privacy is essential because it’s a guard against manipulation. Keeping secrets and confidentiality are all secondary functions and not the most important.

Imagine what Ola can do when they know you have Uber installed. They can lower the price (artificially) and force you to use their service. This is manipulation. Imagine what Swiggy can do when they know you have a loan application installed - they can assume your financial hygiene and basically inflate the prices and offer you EMI for paying for your food. Your bank application can reject your loan application based on whether or not you have a qoran app installed on your phone. Facebook app can make reasonable assumptions about your location (based on whether you have a Tamil Calendar) and tell the ruling party that you are a good target for their advertisement campaigns.

ALL of this is to make you do things you would otherwise not do (or atleast not likely to do). That is manipulation.

The entire reason the advertising industry exists is to get people to do what they might not do without coercion, shaming, threats, etc. - all of which are forms of manipulation. This is why I am against advertisements in general. When companies like Mozilla say crap about “privacy-preserving” advertisements, they want you to think privacy is about confidentiality, that is, keeping things a secret.

This is a clear case of manipulation to make you forget the other, most important aspect of privacy - IT PROTECTS YOU FROM MANIPULATION. That is why we should be against advertisements in general.

There is overwhelming amount of options today for deploying something to the Internet. We have got some PaaS like fly.io and heroku that allow us to deploy worldwide with simple commands. Also there is platform like Neocites that expose our static stie and there is Bearblog and Pika exclusively for blogging

But I want to learn the basics of renting a virtual private server(VPS), configuring it and running my own site, which gives me yet another cool feeling beyond words. Is learning the nitty-gritty of server setup obsolete these days? Maybe, but it’s fun! So this is why I’m going to spend the rest of this blog post highlighting my personal checklist for provisioning and hardening a VPS!

Prerequisites

First things first : We need a server to put our website up. My preference for a newbie like me would be renting a Shared CPU - you can get a nice starter server for $5/month - basic Nanode 1GB. If you encounter any doubts or any help regarding this… you can contact my guy Kamalavelan(btw he works for Linode)

Connecting to the Server

After the purchase step, you will be provided with a root password for your server, then look around for your IPv4 address. using this you can login to your rental vps from your pc.

Once you got those both, open up your terminal and
ssh root@SERVER_IP_ADDRESS
. Then you need to enter your root password and hit ENTER (boom). You got into your remote server.

Basic setup

Securing the Server

The basic setup is done! Let’s secure the server.

First, we’re going to disable the option to login as root because that user is too powerful and there’s
no reason to be logging in as it anymore. Open up the
/etc/ssh/sshd_config
file with the nano text editor:

PermitRootLogin no

Save this changes(Ctrl + S) and quit(Ctrl + X)

Configuring a Web Server

Lets make our website working,

alternatives

xda forum

fuck google

Many of you know that you can use an Android without a Google account. What I find interesting, is, even if you choose not to login to your Google account, in order to use your device, you nevertheless have to agree to Google’s terms of service!

So even though you may physically own the metal and plastic which comprises your device, and have the receipt to prove it, you do not own the right to use it.

The only known way around this is to replace the built-in operating system with something else. I really don’t know where I’m going with this, except to tell you how much this surprised me when I naively thought I would outsmart Google by not logging in.

Google however has a licence agreement with phone manufacturers to install Google’s version of Android onto their phones since Google provides both stable updates and patches, as well as providing an whole ecosystem and the original “Play Store” with their crap security features.

Also the phone manufacturers get Google-Android for free! They only have to add their own custom packages and drivers for the hardware pertaining to that device.

That is what people “want” since it makes life easier for them and makes them all fuzzy inside to be monitored 24/7 by a search engine giant that has a main revenue of selling private data.

why degoogle? what it gives

Purpose of Avoiding Google: Reflect on why you want to avoid Google. Is it to protect your personal data, avoid targeted ads, or maintain a sense of privacy? Understanding your goals can help you make informed decisions.

Reality of Data Privacy: In today’s digital age, complete anonymity is challenging. Even if you avoid Google, other services and apps may still collect your data. It’s important to be realistic about what you can achieve.

Effectiveness of Privacy Measures: Extreme privacy measures can be time-consuming and may not provide the level of protection you expect. Balancing privacy with practicality is crucial.

Security of Personal Information: While concerns about data privacy are valid, it’s also true that companies like Google invest heavily in securing their servers. Your personal information is generally safe with them.

Impact on Daily Life: Overemphasizing privacy can sometimes hinder your ability to enjoy and use technology effectively. Finding a balance that works for you is key.

safety net

Safety Net was Google’s system to validate a platform’s security and allowed app developes to prevent use on a compromised (rooted) system. The Universal Safety Net Fix(USNF) solves this issue and and enabled users to use apps that try to detect a rooted system.

Google has since deprecated Safety Net for a more aggressive root detection system call Play Integrity. Play Integrity has various levels of trust and in the initial rollout it functioned just like Safety Net. Recently they have made it look into other aspects of the system to determine if the system is compromise. This new detection method has rendered USNF obsolete and ineffective.

Alternatives

I use firefox for ideological reasons, and also for its features. Chrome/brave and other chromium based browser are all under the same Google umbrella. Firefox is the only real non-google alternative.

Mail clinet - K-9 mail, Fair mail

henrikkarlsson.xyz

Writing for a general public, you need to be broad and a bit bland. I didn’t want a general public. I wanted a specific set of people, the people who could help me along as a human being obsessed with certain intellectual problems. I didn’t know who these people were. I only knew that they existed. Hence my writing was a search query. It needed to be phrased in such a way that it found these people and, if necessary, filtered others.

lesswrong.com

avabear.xyz

A blog post is a search query. You write to find your tribe; you write so they will know what kind of fascinating things they should route to your inbox.

Ted Chiang on the power of written language in Truth of Fact, Truth of Feeling:

Writing was not just a way to record what someone said; it could help you decide what you would say before you said it. And words were not just the pieces of speaking; they were the pieces of thinking. When you wrote them down, you could grasp your thoughts like bricks in your hands and push them into different arrangements. Writing let you look at your thoughts in a way you couldn’t if you were just talking, and having seen them, you could improve them, make them stronger and more elaborate.

I wrote this list using some somewhat arbitrary constraints, to narrow it down from the maybe 150 blogs I have in my bookmark:

there are “a lot” of posts, for some arbitrary definition of “a lot” (there are so many blogs I love where the person has only written like 5 posts!)

so, this is more obivious that I like reading blogs

But I dont have a list of concrete plan to contribute considering my landscape.

By then, I get to see wiki page of Fosscell NITC, which they have a list of Campus guide which seems informational and helpful to anyone who wanna join there as a fresher. This prodded me to write wiki as a guide for SOTC and PU which would help people in University to know about other department activity, club, and what they could get benefitted from the department.

SOTC wiki

For sotc wiki, I want to push all the existing activities of SOTC like sessions, notes, workshops and other activites that we organize which would be both informative and display for upcoming students. I see PU as a special place which is a birth of many revolutionary ideas and movements to talk about the political nature of the landscape. As a part, our FOSS movement also will be a eyeopening for the students and this wiki will be a guide for them

Our data is different from materialistic resource because data is unique and priceless.

Unlike physical resource, which has fixed value and sums up to a linear growth, our data become invaluable when it combines with one another …not like a linear approcach with materialistic resource.

The influence of Free Software foundation europe(FSFE) & Chaos Computing club(CCC) in EU plays a significant role in data protection, digital rights and privacy. These groups have be most influencial organizations which been vocal to such issues that pushes the EU to implement such laws.

How we can change the society

Enhancing our Personal technical skill - which includes continously inproving our skills and utilizing it to create more consensual technology which can address societal issues. Skill can be diverse which can contribute to digital landscpae…ana skill irukanum

Organizing Free software movement and its policies (eg. Public money, public code in EU and Public audit of EVM machine in Australia to check the integrity of the democratic process which pushes the govt to be more transparent which is crucial to society)

Sharing our mind share with our peers (to differenciate whats right and whats wrong technically which provokes the critical thinking or our technology and helps to build a collective understanding)

Hack(noun) - workaround or quick fix
It is to find a creative solution which is qucik and effective and resourceful.

As of now, name hacker is entitled to the cyber criminals which has been a negative connotation.

When I was randomly scrolling in Reddit, i came across a guy asking about how to backup sites and its content in Data hoarder sub reddit. There is came across this free software tool called httrack which take a backup of all the content in the webpage. I Tried scrapping Prasanna’s blog page and the mirror started and scraped the complete file.

rclone

The another tool which i found is rclone from the same r/data hoarders. This rclone is easy and simple backup solution which can be used to store cloud backup solutions. It offers many features like encryption, auth and many more. This has config for all the cloud providers and I used my institution Google drive to backup all my data which inlcudes my laptop files and home pc files. I got a backstab from my instituion is that they offer 2tb backup for their mail-ids and after i used 91gb of data in the drive they restricted it to 50gb limit. Now i Cant send or receive mails or anything

My backup solution

I also get to know about the Backup soluiton which everyone talk about. There is something called 3-2-1 backup method or statergy

maintain 3 different copies of data, which include one main cope and 2 other redudant copies

Use 2 different types of media storage, mostly people use one physical storage backup. Physical storage like pendrive or HDD/ssd

keep one set of backup data off-site

rsync

When i need to copy a file from my laptop to homeserver, i use this rsync. I just created a folder in my pc and also in my homeserver. Whenever I just want to send some file, i send via rsync and also wrote an alias in my
.zshrc
as i have static ip configured for my homeserver in my router

Question: Linux, being free software, raises the question of who really benefits from it. It seems that the so-called startups or large corporations are the ones truly profiting from this free and open-source software. Somehow its gonna get used by some corporate and the code gets closed which doesn’t benefit the society and also doesn’t pay back the creator right?

It’s true that Big corporations using FOSS and not giving back is a big point of contention and discussion. It’s a point that was raised during the whole Log4j situation (IIRC the creators had to basically sacrifice their Christmas for no monetary compensation), and again during the XZ backdoor situation.

The truth is, financing open source is a very complicated thing, and not a lot of people set up reliable ways of monetization. Which can backfire if, by chance, the project explodes in popularity, scope and amount of labor needed to be performed.

I see many companies leverage linux for their operations. However, this profit is often built on the backs of the community that contributed to the software’s development. Many companies, such as Red Hat and Canonical, actively give back to the community, funding development and supporting the projects they rely on.

Many businesses use FOSS without donating or contributing time or knowledge.

referencing here the zloirock at core-js as his story became very popular in February of 2023. He talked about how 52% of the top 1,000 websites used his code, yet he was only making about $1,000 a month to maintain it.

Question: The question which hit me if any core product built as FOSS powers other software, the creator often doesn’t receive any significant monetary benefit other than donations.

While many contributors begin as hobbyists, some have transitioned to full-time roles within the open-source community or have found ways to monetize their skills through consulting, support services, or creating complementary products. Additionally, large companies often hire developers who maintain open-source projects, it gives a big boost in the resume that maintaining a package or software and allowing them to focus on what they love while also getting paid, either way improving the quality of the product, so it’s a win-win.

I see as it enhance skill development, community engagement, and the ability to shape technology. Additionally, successful projects often attract funding and sponsorship, enabling creators to sustain their work over time.

Also he added this question: when a student or emerging developer accepts the core of Foss and wanna release it to the community, he doesn’t get anything financially back right

Yes, This is a common concern. While the immediate financial benefits may not be apparent, there are significant long-term rewards for emerging developers. Contributing to open-source projects can help build a strong portfolio, gain real-world experience, and connect with other professionals in the industry. These connections can lead to job opportunities or collaborations that may not have been possible otherwise. This is why some even create dual-licensed projects or offer premium features while keeping the core product open-source.

QUESTION: Even when a company uses or modifies a product licensed under the AGPL, they are required to release their derivative work under the same AGPL license. But is this actually happening? always rolls into my head

Enforcement of AGPL can be difficult, but many companies understand the importance of compliance for their reputation and relationships within the open-source community. While some may not comply, organizations like the Free Software Foundation and Software Freedom Conservancy actively monitor and enforce these licenses, encouraging adherence to open-source principles.

Related video about Open Source Exploitation

What they get is the attribution which is the recoginisation right?? Even worse when it comes to open source philosophy, when product is released under popular OSI license, the focus is not on what a commercial entity does with the product right, the licence says that the creator shouldn’t care about that

And yes, often the focus of Project can shift away from the original creators. However, many projects adopt governance models that emphasize transparency and community involvement. This ensures that contributions are recognized, and the community’s voice remains influential in the project’s direction.

While the critical point some companies do take open-source code and create proprietary solutions, many successful open-source projects thrive precisely because they remain open and encourage community contributions. This creates a cycle where the community and companies can both benefit.

By advocating for free and open-source principles and supporting projects that align with these values, we can have an environment where both creators and users see tangible benefits.

Such contradictions are to expected when trying to make something free in an unfree world. We are choosing the liberation side.

Also consider this as further reading

Please happily share if you got any critique of some thoughts regarding this.
anyways thats pretty much a huge one. byebye <3

It is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control within the Internet.

DNS currently has ~300 million DNS registrations. Both query and reply messages follow the same message format. Both always include Name, Type, Class tuples — Class is usually IN. Names cannot be wildcarded but type and class can

How do we resolve domain names to IP addresses? Resolves starting from the root and makes it way down the network hierarchy

Root (13 of these worldwide)

Top-level Domains (e.g. .com, .net, .org, etc.)

Second-level Domains (e.g. UBC)

Subdomains (e.g. www)

Individual machines

Local DNS Servers (not actually a part of the hierarchy, just caches data)

Authoritative DNS server is the server with the actual jurisdiction of the domain name you are looking for. The authoritative server of cisco.must.ac.ug is cisco server under must(Malabar University). I use this for learning networks with cisco materials They have this fking nice directory which will give us a clear idea about networks

Types of queries

Recursive Query — if the name server doesn’t know the answer, it asks a downstream server (recursively) for the answer on your behalf.

Iterative Query — if the name server doesn’t know the answer, it tells you where to look at next, you do all the querying

Yes, a substance abuse problem. We are consuming a lot of information irrelevant to our willness but that will eventually get used to us and also this will comfort us making us not realize that it sucks our time and that procastination that done is by video content majorly. The one thing i noticed in me that, i have been consuming a lot of reels when i see my digital welbeing dashboard and realizing that these are my peak time which i should stipulate for upskilling myself.

Giving us a break to ourselves doesn’t mean that we have to stipulate for the screentime. Sometime we feel like that gives the social awareness of whats happening outside the world. But along with that we are suggested and pushed with our own tuned algorithm just for our wish. This include video, image and much more social media formats.

I personally feel that this video and image will reduce our reading. we are constricted ourselves that we get everything here in the social media and often getting back to social media with our own muscle memory. I personally like the practice of surfing web and seek for some good blogs which will be in their perspective and will convey what they actually feel which i personally like.

I felt many times that when I take my phone for something and I will unknowingly ended up seeing some reels instead of the actual work i came for my phone. This looks silly one, but for me it is the greatest distraction of all time which i need to restrict at any cost.

I started using it because I found it cool and I wanted to be so too. It is also less of a pain in the butt compared to Windows. I got used to the Linux way of doing things and I find the way Linux does many things like

It just works as the way I want

the way I install programs

the complete freedom of it

the transparent nature of it all

more appealing than Windows’ way of doing things.

So, I love Linux because it doesn’t get in my way as Windows does.

I’m using EndeavourOS with KDE and Plasma, these combo are a heaven-send for being able to make a genuinely functional theme that’s adjustable and capable of being flexible. But now, I’m also trying bspwm just to rice linux with the reddit folks suggessions(abso unixporn). Also, the customisation is just a french kiss. Its lightwight nature and its ability to run memory efficient on my laptop is also a defining factor.

I feel like when a problem occurs, I gained a confidence that I can very well overcome the issues over here and also there are lot of community forums out there to help out linux folks(proceeds to enters arch community forum and slammed out by saying RTFM…lol). There are lot more OS out there for different use case and many will suggest a newbie to a debian-gnome or Ubuntu or linux-mint or pop_os as it is straightforward and easy to use. Im not saying that others are like bit hard to figure out, as im using arch based one with kde plasma on it making it easy to study and work over my things. It does the things in an easy way that i dont have the pain in my ass.

Also more than the cool stuffs in linux, I chose linux becasue of the FOSS and the the concentual technology that i want and the privacy it offers. Luckily i got nice people around me with super-cool wide thinking tech nerds who advocates freedom in both technical accepts and political accepts which I felt comfortable with them.
